Andrew Lacon in Mexico City

During September Andrew Lacon was artist-in-residence at SOMA in Mexico City, where he undertook research into the display of pre-hispanic art. Here’s an update Andrew sent halfway through his residency:

‘Now at the half way point of my time at SOMA Mexico, I am deep into research around the use of colour and display of particularly pre-hispanic sculpture.

Having already visited most museums and met with curators and artists, I am currently researching Fernando Gamboa and his touring exhibition ‘Mexican Art, Ancient and Modern’ and the inspiration taken from Frederick Kiesler.

I am developing ideas and works through plans for sculptures, photographs and sketches. I will hopefully be creating some sculptures whilst here and documenting them before continuing to develop this work in the studio in Birmingham.’

Andrew’s residency was supported by the British Council in Mexico.
