‘Animal Spirits’ tells the story of a group of survivors who, following a global technological disaster, have founded an arts and craft community within a walled town in Northumberland. In the absence of technology, the community members work together to find creative methods and means of surviving using the skills they each have. The story chronicles the arrival of a curator from the Lake District, whose ideas and ambitions create disturbances in the apparent harmony of the community.

To bring the story to life, local residents from Berwick-upon-Tweed and Coniston took part in workshops in which participants produced hand-painted images to illustrate the story. Produced and funded by Berwick Visual Arts and Grizedale Arts with additional funding from Arts Council England.

An exhibition of paintings from the project is on show at Berwick Visual Arts 19th March – 8th May 2016 and at Grizedale Arts, Coniston Village Hall 13th – 25th May 2016.

The book is designed and written by the artists with 53 full colour illustrations by project participants.
