As part of Digbeth Delights, start your Supersonic Sunday at Minerva Works, a unique huddle of independent art spaces set aside Digbeth’s Grand Union Canal.
Running 12-5pm the afternoon features music, performances, workshops and talks.Expect brutalist composition, contemporary improvisation, punk protest art, and a subverted tea-party.
At Grand Union, Musician and writer Honor Gavin talks to artist Aideen Doran about their shared interest in Birmingham’s architecture and the influence it has had on their artistic endeavours.
They will talk amongst the setting of Im Bau, an experimental research space devised by artist Aideen Doran, that brings together her research on Birmingham as a space for artistic, economic and ideological production.
The talk will be followed by Honor Gavin performing sounds from Yes Manzoni, a sonic celebration of Birmingham’s twentieth century urban transformations.
Honor Gavin is a writer, musician and founding member of the whenwebuildagain.org collective. Her novel, Midland: A Novel Out of Time, an anarchic history of the city of Birmingham, was published by Penned in the Margins in November 2014. A companion record, the Yes Manzoni EP, is distributed by Number Line Records. After a period based in Berlin, where she held a Fellowship at the Berlin Institute for Cultural Inquiry, she currently teaches literature and film at the University of Sussex, and plays piano and guitar in a band called Textual.
Aideen Doran studied at the University of Ulster and the Glasgow School of Art, and now lives and works in Glasgow. Her practice centres on a rigorous process of research, through which she investigates contentious historical and political questions – generating artistic responses to archival documents, images and impressions that she encounters, collects and orders. She is currently completing a practice based PhD in Fine Art at Northumbria University, researching the possible values of artistic production in an information economy.
