Description

This edition uses various print processes to merge the disparate images from a daily newspaper spread featuring a masked woman showing her support for the imprisoned Russian band Pussy Riot. The artist has drawn over the original newspaper page by hand before having the image photographed and continuing to alter and adjust it digitally. Elements of the original have been cut out in Photoshop and repeated; stars and minarets swirl across the surface, rockets and plates of seafood collide. The digital file has then been printed using a lithographic process. Finally the artist has silk-screen printed over each of the 25 editions by hand to produce a series of unique prints.

Elizabeth Rowe works with printed matter such as newspapers, magazines, postcards and other found material to create collages, prints and drawings. Employing a range of processes such as cutting up, reassembling or drawing over, she mashes up and reinterprets different sources, histories and ideas. With reference to movements such as Dadaism, Surrealism and Fluxus, Rowe’s practice appropriates imagery from the world of visual culture to create overlaps, ruptures and spillages of meaning that open spaces between public and private experience and make connections between the global and the local.

Elizabeth Rowe (b. 1974, Leicester, UK) lives and works in Birmingham and is a studio holder at Grand Union. Recent solo exhibitions include, ‘A mountain & a house’, Bloc billboards, Sheffield, (2011), ‘If Distance Was An Object Between Us” Het Wilde Weten, Rotterdam, NL, (2009) and ‘Tiny Details Grotesque Proportions’, The New Art Gallery Walsall, (2008). Selected group exhibitions include, ‘Rotate’, Contemporary Art Society Offices, London (2012), ‘Memory of a Hope’, Ceri Hand Gallery Liverpool, (2011) and ‘Jerwood Drawing Prize’, London then touring (2010).
