To celebrate the life and work of American filmmaker, poet and gay activist Marlon T Riggs (1957–1994) CineQ Film Festival and Grand Union are commissioning an Artist/Chef to create a dining experience that will accompany an intimate screening of one of his most seminal works, ‘Tongues Untied’.
Marlon Riggs, with assistance from other gay Black men, especially poet Essex Hemphill, celebrates Black men loving Black men as a revolutionary act. ‘Tongues Untied’ intercuts footage of Hemphill reciting his poetry, Riggs telling the story of his growing up, scenes of men in social intercourse and dance, and various comic riffs, including a visit to the “Institute of Snap!thology,” This is an enjoyable film, the very definition of light and dark and a must see for any QTIPOC.
An artist/chef will be selected to create a dinner that responds to the film and the themes it raises. The artist will be announced following the call out, further details about this can be found here.
This event will take place at BOM in Birmingham, an accessible building. Tickets for the event are £13 and are available through the CineQ website here.
