Eric Moschopedis and Mia Rushton are interdisciplinary visual artists, facilitators, and community organisers. By combining the playfulness of childhood with the scrutiny of ethnographers, they create relational and participatory works that invite audiences to become active agents in the creation of community.
During the residency, they investigated the canal networks in Birmingham—particularly the canals that pass through Digbeth, the community that Grand Union is situated in. Investigations into these networks took place in three distinct ways: through historical research, engaging with different user groups (boaters, recreational users, and businesses), and through a process of walking, boating, finding, and collecting along the canals themselves.
We would like to thank Esmée Fairbairn for funding the Canal & River Trust ‘Community Roots Project’.
Walks
Fellow Schemers
Eric and Mia invited members of the public on an evening walk along the Grand Union canal. During the walk Eric and Mia will talked about their experiences in Digbeth and plans for making work in response to the canal network.
