“I grew up in Jamaica, my family served the community and that was instilled in me. I come to England and I served the community right from the beginning, all the way through” – Mrs Eunice McGhie-Belgrave
Mrs Eunice McGhie-Belgrave has been a dedicated community organiser and is the founder of Shades of Black Community Project based in Handsworth. Shades of Black was founded in 1989 in response to a need for community support in light of continuous state violence and racism following the Handsworth uprisings in 1985. Mrs Eunice McGhie-Belgrave and worked to unite a fractured community in Birmingham with the intention to ‘reconcile, reassure and rebuild the community’. It began as an allotment project that brought young people together to learn how to grow their own produce and was aimed at enhancing life skills through social activities for people across all walks of life. We can recognise the importance of biodiversity and maintaining our environments and ecosystems, but it is through the care, compassion and integrity of people like Mrs McGhie-Belgrave that enables growth, unity and balance within the community.
