Grand Union and Stoford are looking for expressions of interest from Birmingham based artists for a new Community Engagement Commission. This is an exciting opportunity for an artist who is interested in exploring the conditions of regeneration for the many different communities of Digbeth. Working collaboratively with stakeholders the artist will develop a unique public engagement programme during 2025/26, as the Typhoo building is transformed into The Tea Factory by the BBC, to become a new part of the Digbeth neighbourhood.
We are looking for an artist who will find imaginative ways to create a dialogue between people and place, providing new perspectives for this site, its development, and the wider Digbeth community.
Art at Typhoo will present a new public art commission and accompanying engagement programme, created with local organisations, communities and stakeholders.
It will centre ideas of regeneration of the old Typhoo Tea Factory building and the wider context of Digbeth’s industrial and artistic heritage and communities. There will be two artist commission opportunities which will run alongside each other to create:
- A new landmark public site specific commission – to create a public artwork for the external space of the Typhoo redevelopment.
- A community engagement commission, comprising temporary and event-based community led projects that builds connections with local communities.
Artist Led Community Engagement & Public Programme
The total Artist fee for this work is £10,000 inclusive of VAT and expenses. A separate £5,000 production budget will be available for the activities and will be managed by the artist and Grand Union team.
On invitation the selected artist will develop a full Concept Engagement Proposal to be agreed with Grand Union and Stoford. Following the sign off of this engagement plan, the public programme will be developed with Grand Union’s Programme Director and a more detailed plan will be developed and discussed with the project team and relevant stakeholders.
Expressions of interest should be submitted by email to info@grand-union.org.uk
Deadline: 13 December 2024, Midnight.
