‘To care from the place you’re from’ is programmed with invited guest Teresa Cisneros and Andrea Francke, and draws on forms of curating with care. To care is to make, maintain, think about, think with, think through collective positionalities at various moments in time. Andrea and Teresa were occupied with how they practice care and for what end.
Teresa and Andrea share a practice of conversation. For this session at BALTIC 39 they used this space of conversation to develop collaborative critical thinking in the form of a Platica. This was followed by an introduction to both of their practices, which span different forms of being within the cultural sector. Cooking featured in the day as a form of collaboration and sharing.
The afternoon featured contributions from Lucy Lopez and Jo Capper of Grand Union, followed by embodied reading excerpts from Document 0 and the Logic of Care. The day was ended with more questions to develop our thinking on how we practice from the place we are from, how we affect others, and our complicities in how we may be acting in careless ways.
Teresa Cisneros is a Chicana living in London. She is an arts administrator by choice but has been a curator, an educator, and an artist. Cisneros has worked with art institutions including Nottingham Contemporary, Spike Island and Serpentine to explore care, policy making, learning, and the diversity agenda. She is a part of agency for agency and is Inclusive Practice Lead at Wellcome Collection.
Andrea Francke is a Peruvian artist based in London. Her work focuses on the political implications of categories constructed through and for knowledge-making processes. Her work focuses on concepts of smoothness and the production and maintenance of infrastructure to redefine those categorisations and for political change.
